 Welcome to WalkingMum.com

After years of being a sedentary indoors Mum I was introduced to the "pleasures" of walking in the countryside.  In the last 10 years or so I have managed to do lots of walking in England, Scotland and Wales, both at low level and on the higher tops.

Since buying my first digital camera  I have collected many photographs of the areas I have visited and have finally been persuaded to set up a website in order to share some of my photographs and experiences of the days I have enjoyed (or in some cases, endured) on the hills.

So here is a collection of  photographs and walk descriptions outlining some of my many wanderings in the glorious British countryside.

Due to a slight accident I have been unable to walk for a couple of months. I Lorraine signatuream now recuperating and will be doing short walks until my knee gets stronger.

If you would like to get in touch with me or comment about a walk or the photographs please use the 'Contact' button at the top of the page.

6.66 miles
784' ascent
Read more... I was going to walk to Darwen Tower today but when I had a closer look at the map I decided to explore the slightly more gentle countryside at Witton Country Park.

I had a lovely stroll through fields and woods and even a short section alonside the River Darwen - just what the doctor ordered.

Scout Scar, Westfield Nature Trail and Gummers How
Friday, 13 August 2010
Read more... This was my first trip to the Lake District since I injured my knee. These gentle walks not only eased me back into walking but also helped to give me a little more confidence in my knee.

On the Friday afternoon, I explored Scout Scar and on Saturday I had a leisurely walk from Rampside along the Westfield Nature Trail.  I left Barrow early on Sunday morning and unwilling to leave Cumbria without another walk, I very daringly ascended Gummers How with no ill effects.

Downham and Bolton Abbey
Tuesday, 03 August 2010
Easy grade
3.80 miles
394' ascent
Read more...Today I visited Downham and the Bolton Abbey Estate with Jeanette and Julie.  We were going to try to walk up Pendle Hill, but when we arrived at Barley, Pendle Hill was swathed with thick menacing cloud and we opted for a low level walk instead.

Its been a while since I have been able to get out and about and this gentle stroll was just what I needed to give me some of my confidence back.

Malhamdale
Read more...Malhamdale is the name given to the upper reaches of the valley of the River Aire, famous for spectacular limestone scenery at the head of the valley at Malham.  Villages in Malhamdale include Kirkby Malham, Airton and Bell Busk, south of which the infant River Aire flows on to Gargrave and Skipton, and from where the valley is better known as Airedale

Limestone Country
Read more...The south west corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is limestone country.  The action of  glaciers and their melt waters  on this limestone has created some of our greastest scenery - the breathtaking 260 feet high amphitheatre of Malham Cove, the awe-inspiring gorge of Gordale Scar and the brooding overhang of Kilnsey Crag.
